Oaklawn rehabilitation facility sets new standard with dedicated Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist Medical doctor is Kentucky’s only full-time specialist in a rehab or long-term care setting

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (November 3, 2008) – Oaklawn, a rehabilitation and long-term care facility in the city’s east end, has appointed Jason Miller, M.D. as in-house Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) specialist beginning November 3. To date, Oaklawn is Kentucky’s only skilled nursing care facility to hire a full-time physician dedicated to restoring patients’ physical function. Dr. Miller’s medical specialty centers on restoring post-acute patients’ bones, muscles, joints, and nerves as commonly related to neurological and orthopedic conditions.

Known for its unique, hotel-like setting and amenities, Oaklawn is highly referred by regional neurological and orthopedic surgeons with patients who have post-surgery rehabilitation needs. Often, a medical transition is necessary before these patients may return home. Seventy percent of Oaklawn’s clients are rehabilitation patients, which led facility administrators to seek a specialist dedicated to the non-routine medical needs of these recovering patients.

“Dr. Miller is an invaluable asset to Oaklawn and his role here is a first in this region,” said Burke Stephens, RN, Oaklawn executive director. “We’re truly blazing a new trail for patient care in this setting. While Oaklawn enjoys a distinguished reputation as a destination for recovering individuals; patients and their families will take comfort knowing we have a full-time specialist dedicated to their recuperation.”

Dr. Miller comes to Oaklawn from Norton Rehabilitation Physicians where he was an attending physician in inpatient and outpatient settings. While at Norton, his emphasis included acute pain management as well as rehabilitation. Dr. Miller earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, interned with the University of Louisville’s Department of Internal Medicine, and completed a three-year residency there in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

“This is a terrific opportunity to join Oaklawn’s staff - it energizes me knowing I can make a difference in how quickly a patient can recover and return to daily activities with less pain,” said Dr. Miller. “I thrive on helping patients improve their whole person through creative recreational therapies as well as traditional treatments. At Oaklawn, I look forward to positively impacting each patient and helping them recover to the fullest extent possible.”

Oaklawn’s rehab patients are stable enough to be treated away from an acute rehabilitation facility or hospital. These may include patients recovering from a stroke, a debilitating accident or illness, or recent surgery. Dr. Miller will work in conjunction with a patient’s current physician regarding routine medical care.

Louisville-based Senior Care, Inc. operates Oaklawn. “The addition of a full-time physician to Oaklawn’s professional staff really takes this facility to the next level of patient care and sets a lofty standard for others in our industry,” said Jim Alexander, Senior Care Vice President of Operations. “We take pride in setting the bar high and providing the highest-quality care to every patient in all our facilities.” Additional information regarding Dr. Miller’s medical specialty, Oaklawn services, or other information is available upon request.
